QuickProxy 2009.07.19 Submitted

July 20th, 2009

I’ve submitted the latest version for QuickProxy to the Mozilla team, and it should be pending renewal shortly. I’ll update this post once I have a confirmed link to the latest version, as the all versions page hasn’t updated with the new submission.

This should make it compatible with the Firefox 3.5.1 release. Once again I do apologise for the release becoming outdated so quickly, which was caused by an oversight on my part when updating the latest version string to bring it in line with Firefox 3.5.

The release also includes a cosmetic fix for when the browser was first launched. This was caused by the re-code that took place for the 3.5 release, and was due to the update of the icon being done before the startup processing had completed. Now with the icon update occuring after the processing has completed, this problem should no longer occur.

One other problem that I’m aware of in the latest release is with automatic configuration URL’s, and the issue appears to be caused by the browser not correctly loading the configuration from these in the first launch. I’ll be checking further into this to see if I can resolve the issue, although a new version will have to wait until after this version is public, as I don’t want to push the release date back any further than it already is.

Edit:

The updated version is available at https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addons/versions/1557 (or click here).

Any chance I can get the 3.5.1 version directly or do I have to wait for the official channels?

Thanks a lot for the quick update. As usual, nice work on the extension :)

Oh and going a bit off-topic, I’m unable to register an account, as it seems that even after 15 attempts, the captcha I type is always wrong according to the system. It seems it does a nice job blocking the spambots, but the users as well ;)

Seems that a Wordpress update over-wrote the changes made to the login page for the captcha to work. I’ve updated this now and tested it, and it looks like its working again =)

Any chance you could add an option to put the icon on the toolbar instead of the bottom status bar?

When entering addresses and using bookmarks it’s more convenient to simply toggle the proxy from the toolbar than to move the mouse to the bottom right corner which is quite far on a large screen.

    Thanks.

Cheers for the update … I was working with a hacked 3.0 version … :)

Is there any chance you can put back the button to open up the Network settings dialog box on the preferences menu. Ta

and I’m sure you’ve been asked this before, but since we’ve installed Lightning in our Thunderbird, is there any chance that we can get QuickProxy for thunderbird?

    • July 24th, 2009 at 16:37 | #14

      Hi Jad,

Unfortunately the button that was in QuickProxy didn’t actually save the settings, which is why it has been removed in the latest release. I’m still working on that to find out why it isn’t saving the preferences correctly.

Regarding the Thunderbird port, this will be done when I have time to look into it properly, but unfortunately due to my current workload I’m not sure when this will happen.

Awesome! Thanks a lot for your efforts. I know you do this on your own time, but this is really one of the extensions I just really really need.

You have made my work much easier. Thanks!

Thanks for your efforts. Just one comment
In the Firefox upgrade from version 3.0.1 to 3.5, I can’t found the update to the previous version of the plugin, in the updates list.
    I found it searching google.
    Thanks

So has Mozilla always been this slow to approve updates or is it because they are overwhelmed with 3.5 issues? This is an awesome plug in! Works great at work! Keep up the good work.

Great extension! Very useful in the UAE where so many websites are blocked. One thing that would be great is a hotkey to toggle the proxy on/off, is there a way of doing that?
    Thanks.

    • August 4th, 2009 at 14:18 | #21

Hotkey support for this is something that I want to look into. The main thing I want it to be is something in the preferences pane where you specify the combination needed to trigger the change. Hopefully once I’ve resolved the issue with the automatic configuration setting in Firefox I can look further into this feature.

Any updates on this making it to the addons website?? I want to be able to tell people about it without explaining why you cant get it the normal way.

    • August 31st, 2009 at 12:44 | #25

You can finally drop the explanation =) Unfortunately I get no further information other than whether the extension is in public/sandbox stage. What they actually did to it during the 6 weeks it waited for approval I don’t know.
